How do fire hydrants and hose reels work?
- A Fire Hydrant is a connection point that firefighters use to tap into a water supply to supplement their emergency water tanks. Fire hydrants are strategically placed and highlighted to be easily accessed in case of a fire emergency.
- Hydrants are required for larger commercial premises. It's important to ensure your fire equipment is compliant so the fire brigade can connect and activate and/or boost the water supply in case of an emergency.
- Hose reels are used for short-range fire fighting applications inside buildings. They're typically 35m long with a 25L/minute flow rate. They're permanently connected to the water supply and easy to operate by first responders or the general public.
- In order to ensure compliance with Australian fire hose reel regulations, the installation and maintenance of fire hose reels should be done by certified fire protection specialists.
Types of Fire Extinguishers
- A fire extinguisher is a portable fire fighting device used to extinguish or control small fires in an emergency situation. It's not for use on large, out of control fires.
-
It's important to have the right kind of extinguisher on hand for the type of fire you're most likely to encounter on your premises. For example, a water extinguisher will could be dangerous, if used on an electrical or fuel fire.
There are five (5) main fire extinguisher types:
- Water for wood, paper and textiles
- Foam for wood, paper, textiles and flammable liquids
- Dry Powder for wood, paper, textiles, flammable liquids, live electrical equipment and gaseous fires
